Manuel Mota, musicista portoghese nato nel 1970 e residente a Lisbona, sviluppa da quasi due decadi un suo personale linguaggio chitarristico. La sua musica è parte di una tradizione che affonda le sue radici nel blues e che rivelando una moltitudine di influenze e di riferimenti storici riesce ad essere attuale, enigmatica e senza tempo. L'atto creativo e il suonare sono momenti inseparabili e sacri nel processo musicale di Mota per questa ragione viene definito un'improvvisatore. Derek Bailey parlando a proposito di Mota sulla rivista All About Jazz disse: "Mota é davvero intrigante. L'ho visto suonare un paio di anni fà a Lisbona. Non ha suonato a lungo-una ventina di minuti circa- e ciò che ho sentito è stato davvero interessante.. molto radicale, cosa che in questo ambito e di questi tempi è difficile essere". Nel 1998 ha fondato l'etichetta Headlights con la quale pubblica quasi esclusivamente i propri lavori. Ha partecipato negli anni a numerosi festival internazionali dedicati alla musica sperimentale come Musique Action- Nancy, Atlantic Waves-London, Seattle Improvised Music Festival, Rencontres Internationales de Musique Improvisé-Brest, Fonoteca Files-Lisbon, Minim-Barcelona, Ulrichberg Kaleidophon-Linz, o presso spazi performativi come Experimental Intermedia- New York, Greenwitch House Music School-New York, Roulette Intermedium-New York, Casa de Serralves / Museu de Serralves-Porto, Kustlerhaus-Dortmund, Kunsthalle Exnergasse-Vienna, Hamburger Bahnhoff Museum-Berlin, Museu Vostell-Malpartida, WIM-Zurich, Instants Chavirés Paris. Ha suonato dal vivo con musicisti free come Margarida Garcia, Okkyung Lee, Chris Corsano, Noel Akchoté, Martin Siewert, Donald Miller, Lukas Ligeti, Fred Lonberg-Holm e numerosi altri.
